Sunday walk June 22, 2008

Filed under: France - Paris — amanea @ 1:45 pm

Sunday our last day of this unxepectedly sober reunion! We woke up not that late considering how early we got home! Had breakfast at la terrasse since the weather was so nice and went for a walk to the unavoidable Eiffel Tower.

The weather was lovely and we could really enjoy the beauty of the old stones. When I asked Claire what she thought of Paris she made this really interesting comment “Paris feels rich… like look at all this gold and big monuments but we’re not really using them”

I hope their stay in Paris wasn’t too catastrophic, I feel really sorry and disapointed I wasn’t really myself 100%, I guess it’s also part of being human… sometimes our body just let us down!

Roommate reunion June 21, 2008

Filed under: France - Paris — amanea @ 12:38 pm

It had been much anticipated, I had been waiting for that weekend which was supposed to be the highlight of my holidays… and of course… I got sick! How typical!

Curly Claire and pretty boy, my roommates in Taiwan, came all the way from New Castle and Brussels to see me, but unfortunately on that very morning, my body let me down! bouhou! So for our first evening I welcomed them by drinking soup and going to bed early! :(

At least I was able to walk (slowly but still) on Saturday and show them around a bit… Then in the evening the “Fête de la musique” was taking place. However I was not able to have a single drop of alcohol! Plus as I have come to notice every year the quality of this yearly party has come to decline. Before it was a lot more hectic with every person in Paris that might owned an instrument playing in the streets, it is now a lot more professional, the variety has decreased, with an increasing number of marching bands. The safety has improved a little but the atmosphere isn’t what it used to be.

The smell of piss reached its unbearable pick, as Paris has become so well known for not having any toilets (no joke) not a single wall is spared and if you’re a girl your choice is either to buy an overpriced coffee, beg at a restaurant or squat in between 2 cars.

Anyways this grand scale party wasn’t as fun as expected and Curly learned at her poor feet’s expense that you walk a lot in Paris!

Highlight of the night, being stuck in Republic, with no metro or bus (unlike what the town hall had promised). We tried renting those “velib” cheap bicycle system now in Paris, but of course most of them had been broken, Paris is not only know for not having any toilets, it’s also known for not having any taxis! Luckily my sober self dressed in a very casual way won us the favor of a female taxis driver (that obviously felt safer picking up somebody sober than a tall drunk guy that wanted to go to the not so safe suburbs…)

Vacances concept June 16, 2008

My first days off in a year… When I told my Japanese friends that it wasn’t really going to be holidays for me, since I would probably been running around, seeing my family meeting friends… They seemed a bit puzzled as for them, that was their definition of holidays. Indeed, in Europe we always find it odd to see the Japanese tourist traveling around doing one capital a day! Although I can understand it, when your holidays are so limited (they have 15 days per year but they’re only allowed to take seven days in a row) you really want to make the most of it and see as much as possible! But for most French people holidays means… relaxing!

As my time was limited I haven’t been able to do as much as I wanted… I do apologies to the people I wasn’t able to meet, or that I only met quickly… One thing is for sure 2 weeks holidays per year is definitely not enough!!! Me want more!

Mint tea at the Paris Mosque, a very famous place close to Jussieu a nice spot for tourist.

One thing that did change in Paris… The destruction of the Jussieu tower (for asbestos reason!)

Mon Paris June 15, 2008

Whenever I come back to Paris the first thing that usually strikes me is… “it hasn’t changed” as we say “Paris sera toujours Paris” (Paris will always be Paris) It’s a gorgeous city, no doubt about that, but this immortal stillness tends to bring me down.

Paris is a romantic city, one you can just visit walking slowly, going to cafes for a break, sitting on a bench, there’s a nice picture to be taken at every corner, and a monument at the end of every streets. But to me this city feels like a sleeping beauty. I don’t know exactly when it happened but Paris fell into a coma and lost its title of vibrant city. Most of Paris is either state owned (monuments, museums…) and rich owned that is to say, Paris is empty, from what I remember only 60% of the apartments in Paris are being lived in. With the prices going up most of people with a rather modest income have been forced outside of the city (by the way French cities are not build like English ones, the center is for people to live in and the industries and office are usually in the outskirt). France also stopped attracting young talents making it harder and harder for foreigners to work there.

Anyways they are probably quite a few reason for this decline, but one can only notice that Paris is slowly becoming a “museum city”, the fact that Paris wasn’t able to get the Olympics only proves it. (well it also proved our politicians were useless!)

Mr Chat, A famous graf artist, I like his work

L’Academie Française, for those who do not know what it is, its a very french concept, some very talented writers, philosophers… people that represent better the excellency of the french language (with great knowledge and wisdom) form this circle of 40 members, they are called “immortals” and they are the keepers of the french language.

This one just made me giggle, the Embassy of Mali in Paris! and it’s actually very close to where I live! Much more fancy than the one in Tokyo!

oh Holidays! June 14, 2008

After one year of hard work with 0 holidays, I was finally allowed to take some time off, well 2 weeks! Yes for all you lazy Europeans in Japan you’re only allowed 15 days of holidays per year… Worse thing is most Japanese actually don’t even use those days!

Anyways as I’ve always been an expat for most of my life I guess I’ve always been used to the concept of “going home for the holidays”! And so it was time for me to check out old Paris, the place I’ve decided to call home although I don’t really feel “parisienne”

Most importantly for me it was an opportunity to see my family I had not seen in a year, and of course friends… and eat good french food…. Aaah french food!

France, Family, good wine, good food

Food, food, food

Fête de la music June 21, 2007

Filed under: France - Paris — amanea @ 12:57 pm

If you should spend one day, just one day in Paris, then make sure that day is the 21st of June, for on that day Paris celebrates, la fête de la musique. Yes people will tell you that it’s now overrated, that it’s become too commercial and that basically it is just not as good as it used to be… I do share that opinion, but then again I do realize that I might just be feeling that way because I’m growing old and therefore fantacising about the good old days of when I was young!

Still I always look forward to that day with great excitement and often feel disapointed the next day. So what is the 21st of June about? It’s about live music (anyone can go out in the street and play music), alcohol, probably drugs, fashion (music and fashion have always been closely related) and freedom I guess, there’s a feeling of “the streets are ours”
This event is a good way to discover all sorts of music, even if at the end of the day it mostly works as tribe (the new britpop… sorry indie rock… hihi I know someone’s gona be pissed off at me!… neo-punk, old school punks, goth, classical music, marching bands, jazz…) It’s a good day out, a day for music and freedom (and alcohol)

Street art June 13, 2007

Filed under: France - Paris — amanea @ 1:17 am

A week to enjoy Paris, from the classic food, to more avant garde things, walking around… Paris sera toujours Paris (Paris will always be Paris) it’s a nice thought if you’re a tourist, yet sometimes I find that just “desesperant” this hopless stillness, of course Paris is a beautiful city , but Paris never changes, no surprise…

But Paris  can be underground and it’s own way reflects creativity. “Tag” “graph” general street art is quite a thing in France.

Yes this is my last day before I leave for Japan! Oh dear! I must admit that I’m feeling a little bit nervous. Here is a bonus picture of Paris taken on Le Pont Alexandre III. I think I might miss Paris after all!
