A long Journey February 5, 2009

I apologize for the wait… My excuse is… My fingers have been frozen for the last 10 days!

But before getting to that part, lets travel back to where I left this blog, I was in tropical paradise, around 34 degrees Celsius (cause I was still counting in Celsius) with a nice brown tan and a suite case full of skirts and dresses…

The journey to San Fran was… a long one… very very  long one… the Cheapest way to go from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport ( I’m sure you knew that but that is the name of the International Airport of Mauritius) to San Francisco International Airport (which, to be clear is the International Airport of San Francisco) was with  Emirates.

That is to say I took 6:30 hours to get to Dubai first, arriving at at around 4am local time, with 4 hours to kill before my next flight.

So I got to discover Dubai’s terminal 1 and 3. Well I was arriving and leaving at terminal 3 but you could only buy stamps from terminal 1… and I needed stamps to write post cards to refrain myself from falling asleep or shopping… because at 4am everything was still/already open! Well I’ll confess to it I did buy a few useless items!

But anyways my thoughts on Dubai International Airport… it’s alright, not too confusing, a lot of shops, all open, toilets are clean,  helpful people around if you’re lost… One thing that surprised me was that the security was invisible… I mean I felt 100% safe, but I’m used to International Airports with german shepherd, armed police officers or military… and it actually felt nice to be safe without that grim reminder that everyone is potentially a suspect.

So if you have to transfer in Dubai, no problem, well of course it’s not as amazing as Singapore airport but that would be difficult!

So 4 hours later I was on a plane to San Fran. Before starting this journey I had decided not to think about how long it would take…  needless to say I felt a little shocked when I heard it was a 16 hours flight, that is to say probably the longest time for a commercial flight. However I was lucky enough to have 2 seats for me, which made this journey more than bearable, otherwise I think it would have been just back soaring, legs atrophying, bottom wrecking, painfully awful… and I’m rather short and foldable.

So all in all I took over 26 hours to get to San Fran, I went from Dubai straight up to as close as the north pole as can be… cause I think no one is allowed to fly through it, if I am not mistaking it is International territory and a dangerously strategic bridge (well back in the cold war days)… then down Canada and straight down the West coast to SF! (yes I apologize for shrinking that city’s name by the second!)

The good news is I left late at night on the 4th and arrived early afternoon on the 5th!
